You see the problem with a game that focuses on the American civil war is that most people who inhabit this isle have little interest in the subject matter. And we lost. Apart from the rather sad few who spend their days painting little toy soldiers, the nearest most people will have come to the topic is probably through Gibson’s film, The Patriot. This hasn’t deterred GSC Game World however from bringing forth a stand-alone expansion pack for American Conquest.
Granted, people who enjoy this part of history will find everything they want here. There are heaps of historical battles to wage through and everything upon the battlefield is authentic from the units and the way the wage war through to the designs and aesthetics of the units. The trouble is, for your average gamer; the game essentially plays as a rather sub-standard RTS.
You get your armies at the start of each campaign, and to its credit there are often thousands of units on screen at any one time. Naturally, you will need some tactical skill to manage and organise these units into a coherent fighting machine, and a fair bit of patience too.
The trouble is, compare it to something like Rome: Total War and the game falls flat very quickly. For people interested in the topic it’ll certainly appeal, for everyone else there are quite simply much better options out there.
