Different Endings
There are actually 2 endings in MI1. There is not a significant difference, but there is a slight change. When you are using the catapult on Monkey Island to shoot the banana tree, you can also hit your ship and sink it! If you do that you obviously can't get back to Melee Island using that. Instead Herman will help you by giving you a lifeboat he has been having all those years..........If you don't sink your ship, you will sail back with Carla, Meathook, and Otis.
Sam and Max
#1 In front on the Giant Monkey Head is an idol that looks exactly like Sam & Max.

Indiana Jones
#1 I you look at the chalice (the cup) in the Voodoo Lady's house, Guybrush will say "Now, THIS is the cup of a carpenter". In Indiana Jones and the last crusade, Indiana Jones says the same thing.

#2 When Fester Shinetop stops you with the Idol of Many Hands, you can choose to say "It belongs in a museum!" Indiana Jones says the same thing in Indiana Jones and the last crusade.

#3 In the demo the Voodoo lady says "Perhaps you should get a new faculty advisor". In the game "Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade", when Indy tries to pass the students in front of his office, he says "Perhaps you all should find another faculty advisor".

#4 In the demo of Monkey Island 1, Guybrush can pick up the chalice (the cup) in the Voodoo Lady's house and he will turn into Indiana Jones for a moment.

#5 When you open the glowing box on the ghost ship to pick up the root, the theme from Indiana Jones is played.
#6 When Guybrush steps onboard the ghost ship he can say to the ghosts: "I've come for interrogate the prisoner". This is a reference to "Indiana Jones and the last crusade".

#7 When Guybrush has to get the cooking grease and sees the rat he says "I hate rats". Just like Indiana Jones says "I hate snakes".
8 When you talk to Carla you can say "Hi, I'm selling these fine leather jackets." You can also say "I'm selling these fine jackets." to the Fettucini brothers. Indiana Jones says this in the game "Indiana Jones and the last crusade".
Loom
#1 In the Scumm Bar is a pirate named Cobb. He wears a badge saying "Ask me about Loom". If you ask him he will try to convince you to buy Loom, which is another game by LucasArts. He even resembles Cob, the dungeon keeper from Loom.

#2 When you have been shot out the cannon and lie upside-down, you can choose to say: "I'm Bobbin. Are you my mother?" In Loom you control Bobbin Threadbare who is searching for his mother.

#3 When you are talking with Meathook on Hook Island you can say: "I'm Bobbin Threadbare. Are you my mother?" Meathook will respond with: "No, your mother was a duck." In Loom you control Bobbin Threadbare, who is searching for his mother, who is a swan.

#4 In the credits at the end, it says: " Cobb and Seagull appear courtesy of Loom". As mentioned before, Loom is another adventure game by LucasArts.

Star Wars
#1 When Guybrush lands on Monkey Island, Herman says to him: "Did you come in ship I saw out there? You're braver than you look". In Star Wars: A New Hope, Princess Leia says "You came in that thing? You're braver than I thought." about the Millennium Falcon when she is leaving the Death Star with Luke and Han.

#2 When you give the red herring to the troll, he throws his club on the ground. When he ants to pick it up again he opens his hand and "attracts" the club, just like Luke Skywalker.
Sierra Games
#1 When you are on the big cliff on Monkey Island, you can make Guybrush go off the cliff to the right. He falls down and you think he's dead. But just then he bounces up again, saved by a rubber tree. In Sierra games you always die in the weirdest places and a selection screen with the choices: Restore, Restart, or Quit, pops up. The font is even the same as in Sierra games.

Monty Python
#1 When the "No animals were harmed" notice pops up they say that the poodles aren't dead, they're sleeping. This is similar to a dead parrot sketch in an episode of Monty Python. When a man returns a dead parrot, the clerk at the pet store claims that it isn't dead, it's sleeping.
Pinocchio
#1 In front of the Giant Monkey Head is an idol that looks like Pinocchio.
Scumm Bar
#1 The name: "SCUMM Bar" is not a coincidence. SCUMM stands for: Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion. The SCUMM system is used to control Guybrush and characters in LucasArts' other adventures. It was developed by Ron Gilbert among others.

The Princess Bridge
#1 Captain Smirk, the sword trainer, says: "I'm going to put you up against.....THE MACHINE". This is a reference to the Albino from the movie "The Princess Bride" who says to Westley: "So...You're being put up against the Machine, huh?" - referring to Count Rugen's life-sucking machine.

Superman
#1 When Fester Shinetop catches Guybrush in stealing the Idol of Many Hands he says "This looks like a job for Fester Shinetop!" Superman always says "This looks like a job for Superman!"
Pillsbury Doughboy
#1 Above the keg in the Scumm Bar kitchen is a picture of the Pillsbury doughboy, who is the mascot for a dough company.

Love Boat
#1 When Guybrush gets on the ghost ship without being invisible, the ghost
pirates notice him and Guybrush can ask them if they are playing the music
of "Love Boat" which is a popular soap opera.
Cereal
#1 In the cupboard on the Sea Monkey you find some cereal boxes. The brand is CAP'N CRUNCH which is a famous cereal brand. It is recognizable by the drawing of the captain dressed in blue.
TV
#1 The sentence "That's the second-biggest...I've ever seen" is
a catch-phrase from the '60s spy-spoof, Get Smart. When confronted with
immense objects, Maxwell Smart (Agent 86), would declare that they were merely
the second biggest he's ever seen.
Kill Guybrush
#1 When Fester Shinetop throws you in the water, just stay there for 10 minutes. Remember Guybrush can "only" hold his breath for 10 minutes! He will then become very blue and eventually green. You have to restart or load a savegame after this.

Blackbeard
#1 In the SCUMM Bar, the Important Pirate sitting on the far left resembles the infamous pirate, Blackbeard, who would braid his beard before going into battle. The Important Pirate's beard is braided in the same fashion.
Bugs Bunny
#1 After Guybrush has crashed the wedding and Elaine has left, LeChuck will
ask how he plan to stop him. One of the things you can chose to say is "I'll
use my spear and magic helmet".
This is a phrase from the Bugs Bunny episode named "What's opera, Doc?"
where Elmer used this that sentence to describe how he will kill Bugs Bunny.

Futuristic Door
#1 When you are locked up by the cannibals, Guybrush will have to escape. Notice that the door of the hut Guybrush is imprisoned in is locked up. If you go back again and get caught, just escape again and the lock on the door changes. Repeat the act again and you will finally see a futuristic door lock.
The Dam
#1 As you properly know, you blow up the dam by placing the gunpowder on it and then using the flint with the cannonball, but did you know that there's also another way?
Instead of using the flint with the cannonball, you can also use the lens you get by opening the spyglass with the sun and light the gunpowder that way.
Cheats
#1 You probably thought cheat codes didn't exist in adventure games, well you were wrong. Anywhere in MI1 you can press CTRL+SHIFT+W and the game will ask "Are you sure you want to win? (Y/N)" Press Y and you have won the game!
Drawing
#1 On the Sea Monkey, when you go down to the crew room, you can see a drawing of LeChuck on the wall.
Insults
#1 If you talk to the troll and try to insult him (you can try to insult him when you says that you are a pirate) he will say "I once got a dog who was smarter that you!". When you get to fight the pirates once you have been trained by Captain Smirk, you will have that insult in the insult-list.
Tree Stump
#1 In the forest on Melee Island is a weird stump. If you look down through it, Guybrush will discover a system of catacombs. He will try to crawl through it and thereafter the game will ask for disk 22, then disk 36 and finally disk 144. Since the player has none of these disks Guybrush gives up. Of course this is just one of the many jokes in the game and there is no way to get down through the stump. The stump makes another appearance in MI3, check the MI3 in-jokes and secrets page to read more about it.
Errors
#1 If you stand exactly here in the forest and then look at the map, Guybrush will magically transport to the other side of the canyon when you close the map.

#2 You can give all your money to Otis and then you are unable to proceed in the game.
#3 If you don't give the Idol of Many Hands to the Three-Important-Looking-Pirates it mysteriously disappears from your inventory when you get to Monkey Island.
#4 This error only occur in the cd version: In part II go down into the kitchen, pick up the pot, and open the cupboard with the cereal. If you then use the cereal with the pot a message will appear saying "No verb block in object 0" and the game will crash.
#5 If you try to talk to Herman Toothrot after your conversation with him, Guybrush will say, "I can't reach it". This makes no sense since all he has to do is walk over to Herman.
Titanic
#1 When you are trying to buy the ship from Stan and he goes through the extras he mentions "port-hole defoggers". When Guybrush says "I'm not interested in that piece of junk" Stan says "Well don't blame me if you get hit by an iceberg or something!"
