Monkey Island 1 Problem

29/01/02

Hello! Sorry for bothering you, but I have some problems with the first episode of Monkey Island: on my old computer (P133, 40MB) I did get the game to run, but it didn't recognize my Soundblaster 16 (I assume it is the same problem as with Ultima VI with faster CPU-Speed). Now with WindowsME, Secret of Monkey Island doesn't run at all. Do you have a solution to these two problems? I didn't find any on your webpage. Yours sincerely, Stefan

Any ideas? Email me

I keep getting a runtime error on the game when I try to execute it. I've changed all the settings to auto, but it still doesn't work. What might I be doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated. Argo

How to get the Monkey Island to work under Windows 2000

Monkey Island 1:

Right Click on the file monkey.exe and select Properties. Go to the Memory options. Set all to Auto.
This will make the game start without sound.
There is no way to get sound in DOS games under Windows 2000 by using the DOS drivers for your Soundcard.
The only way is to emulate the sound, and there is only one such program available. It's called SoundFX 2000 and costs a lot, but it will give you full sound in every DOS game you try and it supports nearly every old famous soundcard such as ROLAND, SOUNDBLASTER, ADLIB etc. You can download the from http://www.softsystem.co.uk/page3.htm , but it will timeout in 10 minutes until you buy it.

Monkey Island 2:

Same as with Monkey Island 1:

Right Click on the file monkey2.exe and select Properties. Go to the Memory options. Set all to Auto.
This will make the game start without sound.
There is no way to get sound in DOS games under Windows 2000 by using the DOS drivers for your Soundcard.

Monkey Island 3:

When you install the game, do not install Direct X 5.0 because it will not work under Windows 2000.
After the installation is complete, copy the folder RESOURCE from each CD to your MI3 installation folder. Also copy each COMI file (LA0, LA1, LA2) to your MI3 installation folder.
The folder is now 967mb, but now you can launch COMI.EXE to play the game.

*WARNING*

Never try to multitask MI3 in Windows 2000 without saving. This will result in the game crashing.
